I am very confused when watching American TV shows. Can someone please explain all the different school years and how old you are in each of them?
I have an American girl in my form at school, and she's going to be 16 soon- but the rest of us are 14 and 15..... that confuses me too... are we a year ahead or something?!?!

Ok, you enter "kindergarden" at the age of 6 this is basicly a learn your letters, numbers, and how to coperate with others. Then, and this depends on what school district your in, you either go for 5 or 6 years to elementry school, mosltly likely in the same building you when to kindergarden in.  Then, and here its diffrent too, you go to middle school for 6,7,8.  Or Jr. High of 7,8,9, they just depend on how many years you went to elementry school, and really dosent make much diffrence.  Then you go to high school untill your 12th year.  I think that about does it.  I think you can figure the ages out pretty easily.

Well, here, it's kindergarten through 6th grade, and then junior high, which is 7th and 8th. Then, off to high school which is 9th-12th grade.

Oh, and I started school when I was 5 :)

Yeah, some people start kindergarten when they are 5. If your birthday is September-December you can either start early when you're still 5, or wait until you are six, and then turn 7.

Yes you are a year ahead of us.  You actually graduate a year before we do.  I would have graduated last year from Loughborough Girls High School, had I remained in England, but I am a senior here in the US.  No I did not drop a grade.  And yes I am bitter.

Well I live in new Zealand (by Australia) and we go to kindergarten from 3-4years old, primary(elementary) school from 5-10 years old, intermediate(jnr high) from 11-12 years old, and college (high school) from 13-17years old. Then if you want you can go to university (college) when you leave school at 17/18 - depending when you were born, the b'day cut off is June-so yeah it's more confusing. wait till you see NZ tv.

i know you're not asking me but this is how it generally works in the UK:
we have the same age to grade correlation as you guys do, so eg. kindergarten is for 5 year olds and so on. however we have it so kindergarten to year 6 (equivalent to the 6th grade) is simply called the 'junior school', and year 7 to year 11 is called the senior school. years 12 and 13 are referred to as the 'sixth form', (year 12 is the lower sixth and year 13 is the upper sixth). or both years can just be referred to as 'college', which is why it gets confusing as what you guys call college, we call university. university starts after year 13, so i guess we have an extra year.
