Here is a list of foods you shouldn't let your pets eat. But come on, use some common sense. Soda, coffee, ice cream are doubtless unhealthy for animals.

Most of these apply to dogs and cats.

Chocolate - It contains a chemical called "theobromine." The darker the chocolate the worse it is. Even small doses can affect them. It can cause diarrhea, hyperactivity, kidney damage, seizures, heart problems, even death if it's bad enough. Cocoa is used as a mulch sometimes so if you have use that and have a dog be careful.

Salt - Anyone should know that too much salt causes health problems in humans, same as dogs. Their body can't process too much of it. If given too much over time they're likely to develop kidney disease when they're older. So be careful when feeding them scrap foods that has a lot of sodium in t.

Onion, garlic, & anything else in the onion family - Raw onions can cause liver damage and anemia.
Raw eggs - It's hard for dogs to contract salmonella and ecoli but they still can. Cats are more sensitive to this though.

Bones - Dogs wil choke on them. Now big bones that they aren't likely to swallow are good. But smaller ones they can swallow, the bones will get stuck in their throats or cut their stomach up.

Grapes and Raisons - Kidney failure. Small dogs may choke on them.

Mushrooms - Mostly the wild variety can cause kidney and liver damage, abdominal pain, and anemia. So watch your dog when you're taking walks in areas that might have mushrooms.

Anti-freeze - Dogs seem to love how this tastes but it can shut down their kidneys.

Mistletoe - Can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and depression.

Coffee- Has some of the same effects as chocolate. Heart rate increase, diarrhea, seizures, coma, and death.

There are many, many more things that are unhealthy for pets. Including: mothballs, the roots and leaves of apple and cherry trees, certain plants (especially houseplants), alcohol, etc.

If you really want to go far out then check your pet food. "Concerning dog food, you should be looking for dyes and other chemicals, according to Dr. Jane BHA, for instance, which is one of the main synthetic antioxidant preservatives used to prevent food discoloration, has been observed to cause cancer in laboratory rats at certain doses. Small doses are as yet unclear but since dog food is eaten every day caution is advised." - Source.

Source,   Poison Control, and another Source.

If your pet does eat any of these try to estimate how much and what kind was eaten and call your veterinarian.

If my dog can choke on a grape, it deserves to die.

My rat loved grapes and never had day of trouble.

No, the grapes and raisins are actually poisonous.. it's not because the dog will choke on them.

I said they can cause kidney failure (if that's not caused by poisonous I don't know what is), and small dogs may choke on them (by eating them too fast perhaps.)

Who would feed their dog anti-freeze? Or coffee?
That's weird, I cannot imaging anyone even thinking that...

My dogs gotten into her fair share of chocolate (that my stupid mom left out on couch,) but she's never gotten sick from it. Lucky dog.

That's because most candies, like candy bars, aren't made with a lot of cocoa in them. They're mostly just milk and other ingredients.

Animals are naturally curious. Don't be shocked at what they get themselves into.^_^ Including finding anti-freeze, eating spoons, and whatnot. Most people don't mean to give their animals something bad for them, that's what accidents are for.

You should also mention that when using rat poison to kill wild rodents terrorizing the house, one should be very careful about how accessable the poisoned food is by cats.  One of my friends left out some rat poison in the corner floor of his kitchen that night to kill some rats in his house, and unfortunately his cat got into it and was found dead the next morning.

Basically kids, do not feed your animals rat poison or leave it in areas accessable by animals.
