- ADSL

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, a commonly discussed configuration of DSL allows downloads at speeds of up to 1.544 megabits per second, and uploads at speeds of 128 kilobits per second.

- Anchor
-
These are used to mark specific locations within a document. In simpler terms, anchors automatically scroll to a specific place on a web page.

- ASCII
-
American Standard Code for Information Interchange -- This is the world-wide standard for the code numbers used by computers to represent all the upper and lower-case Latin letters, numbers, and punctuation. There are 128 standard ASCII codes, each of which can be represented by a 7 digit binary number.

- Backbone

The part of a network that acts as the primary path for traffic that is most often sourced from, and destined for, other networks.
- Background
-
In web terms, what displays behind the graphics and text on a web page. A background can be a color or a tiled graphic.
- Bandwidth
-
How much "stuff" or data you can send through a connection. Usually measured in bits-per-second. A 33.6 dialup modem can download at around 3.4k/sec, for analogy, you may find it useful to think of bandwidth as the size of the pipe.
- Baud
-
In common usage the baud rate of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second. Baud is synonymous with bits per second (bps), if each signal element represents exactly 1 bit.
- BBS

Bulletin Board System is a computerized meeting and announcement system that operates over the interest, allowing people to carry on discussions, upload and download files, and make announcements.
- Binary

A numbering system that uses only ones and zeros (1 = on, 0 = off).
- Binhex
-
A method for converting non-text files (non-ASCII) into ASCII.
- Bit
-
A single digit number in base-2, in other words, either a 1 or a zero. The smallest unit of computerized data. Bandwidth is usually measured in bits-per-second.
- Browser
-
A program used to load, view, and interact with Web documents. The most famous examples of browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
- Browser Window
-
The part of the browser's display where the contents of a document are displayed; in graphical browsers, the window can be scrolled back and forth through a document. The text you're reading at this moment is in the browser window.
- Byte
-
A set of bits that represent a single character, there are 8 Bits in a Byte.

- Cache
-
A cache temporarily stores web pages you have visited on your computers hard disk. A copy of documents you retrieve from the web is stored in your cache. When you use "go back", or any other means to revisit a web page, your Web Browser first checks to see if it is in your cache, if not, only then will it retrieve it from the server. It maintains a cache so you do not need to download the same page over and over again saving time. If space allocated to cache in your computer becomes full, your browser discards older documents.
- CGI

Common Graphic Interface, the most common way web pages interact dynamically with users. A CGI program handles input and output according to the CGI standard. Usually a CGI program is a small program that takes data from a web server and does something with it, like putting the content of a form into an e-mail message, or turning the data into a database query.

The most common name of a directory on a web server in which CGI programs are stored.
- Client
-
The software that allows users the ability to retrieve and send information to and from the Internet and World Wide Web.
- Co-location
-
Having a server that belongs to one person or group physically located on an internet-connected network that belongs to another person or group.
- Content
-
The actual "meat" of a document, all of the words, images, and links which a user can read and interact with. In other words, what is actually available information wise in the document.
- Cookie
-
A small file from a web server, sent to you when you visited a web site and stored on your hard drive by your computer. When your computer consults the originating server computer, the cookie is sent back to the server, allowing it to respond to you according to the cookie's contents. The main use for cookies is to provide customized web pages according to a profile of your interests.

- Disk Space
-
A measure of the quantity of a web server's hard disk space allocated to each web hosting customer. Disk space is normally measured in megabytes (MB). Disk space is one of the variables by which most Web hosting companies charge their customers. The total disk space your Web site will require is simply the sum of the size of each Web site file. HTML files take up almost no disk space compared to larger picture, graphic, and audio/visual files.
- Domain Name
-
The unique name that identifies an internet site. Domain names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots. The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general. A given machine may have more than one Domain Name but a given Domain Name points to only one machine.
For example, here are a few domain names:
netaguru.com
ashlandinfo.com
columbiahotel.com
There is a overall scheme to things, .com stands for commercial, .net for network, .org for organization, .gov for government, .mil for military, and .edu for US education.

To copy a file from a computer (server) on the Internet to your personal computer.
- DSL
-
Digital Subscriber Line, a method for moving data over regular phone lines. A DSL circuit is much faster than a regular phone connection, and the wires coming into the subscriberÍs premises are the same (copper) wires used for regular phone service. A DSL circuit must be configured to connect two specific locations, similar to a leased line.
