Kilobyte
A kilobyte is equal to 1024 bytes.



L

LAN
Local Area Network operating in a limited geographic area, usually the same building or floor of a building.

Login
The account name used to gain access to a computer system. Not a secret, as with a password.

LYNX Browser
Lynx is a web browser application like Netscape or Internet Explorer that can access information on World Wide Web, but without access to images, film, or sound. Usually used by people with slow modems to eliminate the need to wait for images and other features to download.



M

Mailing List
Usually an automated system that allows one email to be written, and then copied and sent to all of the list subscribers. Examples: First: Their are many joke mailing lists which you can sign up for on the internet. Second: Large companies like AOL compile lists of their users email addresses and sell them to companies who spam these addresses with product information.

Megabyte
A megabyte is equal to 1024 kilobytes.

Meta-Search Engine
A search engine that automatically submits your keyword search to several other search tools, and retrieves results from all their databases on one page for easy viewing.

MIME Type
Multiple Internet Mail Extensions, a method of identifying files such that the first packet of information received by a client, contains information about the type of file the server has sent. Example: text, image, etc.

Mirror
The most common use of the term on the Internet refers to "mirror sites", which are web sites, or FTP sites that maintain exact copies of material originated at another location, usually in order to provide more widespread access to the resource.

MPEG
Moving Pictures Experts Group, a method of storing movie files in digital format.

Modem
A modulator, demodulator. A device that you connect to your computer and to a phone line, which allows the computer access to other computers through the phone system. In this way, most internet users connect to the internet.



N

Netiquette
The code of etiquette on the Internet.

Newsgroup
An online discussion group operated through the Internet.
