A code used to gain access to a secure system. Good passwords contain letters and non-letters and are not simple combinations. A good password might be: virtual81

- Protocol

A planned method of exchanging data over the Internet.
- PPP

Point to Point Protocol, a protocol that allows a computer to use a regular telephone line and a modem to make TCP/IP connections and thus be really and truly on the Internet.

A method of storing movie and audio files in a digital format. Developed by Apple Computer, Inc.

Refers to something that is on a server, not on your local machine.

A computer that serves information and software to a network, usually to internet.

Spamming is an inappropriate attempt to use a mailing list, or Usenet. Example: Jack spammed 50 USENET groups by posting the same message to each.
- Spiders

Computer programs that are used by search engines to roam the World Wide Web via the Internet, visit sites and databases, and keep the search engine database of web pages up to date. They obtain new pages, update known pages, and delete obsolete ones.

SGML is an International standard, an encoding scheme for creating textual information. HTML is a subset of SGML.
- SQL

Structured Query Language is a specialized programming language for sending queries to databases.
- SSL

Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol designed by Netscape Communications to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet.
- Stop

Browser tool bar button. Use to stop downloading of a document.

- TCP/IP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, a set of rules that establish the method with which data is transmitted over the Internet between two computers.
- Telnet

Internet service allowing one computer to log onto another, allows editing, file management and many other features from a remote location.
- Text Editor

Any program which will do even the most basic word processing and will save files to standard ASCII text, sometimes referred to as Plain Text.

- TIFF

Tag Image File Format, a file format used storing image files. Not a compatible web format like GIF and JPEG.
